Ermitano and Vinatero

Ermitano III and Vinatero III Lines Crossed Together

Stryker DD carries Vinatero III lines via his dam’s sire Gitano MOR. Gitano MOR was imported from Mexico. He is the son of Corsario IV (champion of Mexico) who is out of Bizarra XVII (sired by Vinatero III).

Styrker’s grandsire has his own chapter in the book Historical and Current Stallions of the Purebred Spanish Horse. Also with his own chapter in the book is Vinatero III (who is related to Stryker via his mother’s sire Gitano MOR).

The blending of Ermitano III lines with Vinatero III lines not only produced Stryker DD, but it is a formula used by Yeguada los Amadores located in Madrid, Spain. Their mares are direct descendants of Vinatero III and some of the dressage stallions they’ve produced include Encendido 1, Senescal AA, Paseo II, and Wellington AA.

Who was Vinatero III?

Vinatero III played a key role at the stud farm of Jose Luis de la Escalera and helped Jose distinguish his farm from that of his sister’s farm (Maria Fernando de la Escalera). Vinatero went on to become one of the greatest pillars and the origin for Los Amadores Stud in Madrid, Spain. He stood at stud there from 1994 to 1999 when he died. At the stud farm of Jose Luis de la Escalera, he produced many great stallions including Prometido, Faraon XXIV, Manzanillo II, and Superior II. At Los Amadores he sired the sensational horses Camaron XVII, Darro IV, Duraton II and great mares such as Canela IV. One of Vinatero’s daughters, Espiga X, was known for her qualities for dressage, conformation showing, and had a high genetic transmission as proven by her son Paseo II.

Vinatero III was born at Miura Stud Farm which is known for breeding PRES with character, heart, courage, and good movement for working livestock such as the brave bulls. He ended up at Los Amadores due to the owner searching for horses with grand sporting and conformation qualities.

Courageous horses with a good walk and gallop are fundamental qualities when managing fighting bulls.

Vinatero III, a bay, had a majestic presence and his genetics had some of the oldest bloodlines of the breed. His sire, Gemelo II, of the Military stud farm, was by Carinoso 1956 (Bocado son of Bilbaino III), and his mother Zepeda was military also. His maternal line was pure Miura. The objective of Los Amadores where Vinatero III lived his final days was to create Spanish horses with strength, power, lightness, size and capacity for work, - these characteristics which defined Vinatero III.

Vinatero III had a good character and predisposition for work. He had powerful physique with a broad shoulder, elevated withers, magnificent hindquarters, and a good back. These features helped differentiate him from the rest of the horses of his era and made him ideal as a sport and riding horse.

Vinatero’s 165 offspring have helped pass on his genetics further down the line. Some of his descendants include Faraon XXIV who became a stud for the Escalera farm and was reserve Champion of Spain in 1991 and Andora VIII champion of Spain and best movements (in 1988). Other horses include Superior II of the Ymas Stud Farm, Selecto III, Brasil VII, and Escritor. Selecto JLE and Curioso JLE were champions of Spain at the Grand Prix ANCCE finals in 2010 and won many other dressage competitions.

Academico TH II is by Educado X out of Academica II (by Vinatero III). This stallion is the synthesis of Educado X and Vinatero III bloodlines. The breeder used mares from Jose Luis de la Escalera to complement his Guardiola lines. Academico’s grandsire is Centella V. Vinatero III is the sire of Academica II who was the sire of Academico TH II.

Academico TH II

Paseo II is the grandson of Vinatero III and Ermitano III. He stands at Yeguada los Amadores. He was sold and exported to New Zealand. Paso was rewarded with a score of 72% in his 5 year old dressage debut, trained to PSG level.

Paseo, in the book, is described as a potent and extremely beautiful, strong, and proportionate stallion with a noble and expressive look, a magnificent back which transmits the movement of his strong hindquarters, with solid legs and ample and elevated movements. He has an exceptional character, intelligence, and is always willing to work with his rider.
